A Beautiful Buck

Mary Ellen and I and our Schnauzer, Schatzie, were walking around Goshen last night and came upon a beautiful buck behind the shed. At first we thought he was a statue he stood so still, not moving a muscle for the longest time. We stood watching each other. Then a breeze came up and he moved one ear. He was a handsome animal who had the bearing of being the one in charge. In a moment he turned and stepped, silently back into the bushes. - Jim McCrea

Goshen
By: Corinne M. Bailey

The property is unkempt
A meadow, grassy, overgrown

The trodden path leads through the field
Of ancient crops; old plantation

When the path ends you will find
Mixed emotions at the porch

Some say it’s creepy, haunted
Eyes watching your every move

Some say it’s hopeless
Nothing will become of this weathered house

But I say it’s special, unique
I say there is potential, a yearning for repair

Inside the house is musty, the air is close
Walls are non-existent, stairs; unsafe

Antique artifacts; destroyed
Windows, doors, closets…ruined

Hidden mysteries, lying within
Stories, tales, lives once lived

All inside this abandoned place
Atop a hill, almost forgotten

Remnants of once beautiful gardens
Wonderful flowers decorate the front porch

Left-over plantation fields;
Grapes, cherries, apples, plums

The house longs for a purpose once again
You can hear it; listen close

It needs assistance, support
It can be restored, fixed, returned

To its glamour, splendor
All it needs is a helping hand

So let’s rally together, combine our strength
For the sake of our community’s history

Bring back Goshen
